Dr. Ercument Gorgul is a Shanghai-based, multiple award-winning educator, designer, and technologist. Renowned for his multidisciplinary expertise in architecture, neuroscience, interaction design, and art history, he has extensive experience in innovative, transdisciplinary design methods and collaboration.
Ercument has held positions as a Research Assistant and Teaching Assistant at Harvard University and has taught at various prestigious institutions including Hong Kong, Tsinghua, Shanghai, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool, Shih-Chien, and Tongji Universities, as well as the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IaaC) in Barcelona and the Architectural Association’s (AA) Global Schools in China.
An expert in teaching creativity, Ercument’s primary teaching interest is guiding students transitioning into or out of architectural design-related careers, tailored to their backgrounds and interests. He instructs courses and studios focused on topics such as urban experience, remote sensing, affective neuroscience, interaction design, UI/UX, generative design methodologies, parametrics, mapping, visualization, and digital media. His research interests include neuro-design, cognitive science, human-AI spatial interaction, lenient and sustainable design principles, and the future of hybrid spaces.
His Ph.D. research centered on neuro-urbanism, where he measured and assessed human responses to specific qualities of urban built environments using BCI (Brain-Computer Interface) and wearable technologies.
